Throughout Vietnam, and in most Oriental countries, you’ll find that different ethnic and cultural groups are constantly striving to maintain their individual identities. Because of this the people often use festivals to celebrate special cultural and historic events – festivals that bring the people together in unison at a time during which they can celebrate themselves and their rich heritages. The city of <a href="http://www.travel2hoian.com"target="_top"rel="external"title="hoi an" >Hoi An in Vietnam is no different.

On full moon nights - besar bears

The city of Hoi An hosts seven main festivals throughout the year and anyone planning to travel to Hoi An should attempt to visit during one of these times. Festivals are not only fun but provide tourists with an up-close-and-personal opportunity to learn about local traditions, music, folk arts, crafts, and regular customs. So what festivals do the locals in Hoi An celebrate?

7. Goddess of the Seas Ceremony
The Goddess of the Seas Ceremony, also known as the Lady Thien Hau’s Ceremony, is held each year on the 23rd of March. This particular ceremony is usually observed by the Chinese population within Hoi An but the entire community tends to participate.

This particular ceremony is very important to the people of Hoi An because the goddess, Thien Hau Thanh, is responsible for protecting the fishing town and anyone involved in the fishing trade. The two part ceremony features a religious worship followed by a beautiful display including parades, music, dancing, and many other incredible activities designed to engage the community.

6. Long Chu Festival Hoi An
Held on the 15th day of the lunar month of July, the Long Chu Festival Hoi An is another incredibly important cultural event. The people of Hoi An hold the festival annually in an effort to protect the villages from evil and ghosts.

The festival is held in July, at the approach of the summer, because this is the time of year when plagues, epidemics, and other terrible afflictions tend to strike fishing villages. The Long chau Festival Hoi An features many religious events designed to help protect the village and its inhabitants from harm.

5. Marine Sports Festival
Don’t be fooled by the name of this event. The Marine Sports Festival is as much a religious festival as any other. Most of the activities that take place during this festival seem to be focused on water sports but there are significant historic and religious concerns to focus on as well.

The Marine Sports Festival Hoi An is held on the last Sunday of the 4th month of the Vietnamese lunar calendar (usually in May). Because this “sporting event’ is held so close to the Festival of Buddha’s Birthday the two tend to blend. In addition to sporting events participants will go to picnics honoring Buddha and participate in prayers for prosperity and peace.

4. Vu Lan Day
The Vu Lan Day festival is equivalent to what the Christians call All Souls Day. Legend has it that a young man by the name of Kien Muc Lein was enlightened and upon the death of his mother became concerned as she was forced to pass through the 18 gates of hell. He tried to send her food but the evil spirits set it on fire before she could eat it so Kien Muc Lien turned to Buddha for help.

Buddha told Kien Muc Lien to host the Vu Lan ceremony on an annual basis in order to seek forgiveness for the sins his mother had committed while on earth. Also referred to as “Wandering Souls Day,” those who participate usually light candles in the river to guide the lost souls while at the same time leaving food on an alter to help the souls alleviate their hunger pains. This festival is usually held during the 7th month of the lunar calendar.

3. Legendary Night Festival
Officially known as the Hoi An Full Moon Night, the Legendary Night Festival is a monthly ritual held to pay homage to the moon. During the festival the town reverts to all natural lighting. For one evening all electric lights are turned off and cars are not allowed to drive the roads.

During the festival the streets of Hoi An are decorated with beautiful paper lanterns as nostalgic participants read poetry and enjoy music. The best part about this festival is that you don’t have to visit during one specific time of year to witness it.

2. Lunar New Year
The Vietnamese lunar calendar is much different than the one Westerners follow. Even still, the Lunar New Year, which falls on the first day of the first lunar month, is an incredibly important tradition.

Hoi An residents spend the weeks leading up to the Lunar New Year preparing food, decorating their homes, and purchasing new clothes. The festival itself lasts for a full seven days, during which the official three-day holiday is encompassed. Cultural displays, such as the Dragon Dance, Fournoble-animal dance, Unicorn dance, and many other musical performances are held throughout the festival.

1. Mid Autumn Festival
The Mid Autumn Festival is not actually held during the middle of the fall season but is instead held towards the beginning. The festival, geared mostly towards children, is considered to be a moon festival but is nothing like the Hoi An Full Moon Night held monthly.

The two-day Mid Autumn Festival is held on the 14th & 15th of the first month of fall. During the festival the people of Hoi An thank the moon for shining year round. The festival is filled with fun, games, entertainment and – most importantly – the exchange of moon-cakes.

All of Hoi An’s festivals are incredible sights to behold. Timing your trip so that you’re in town for at least one or two shouldn’t be difficult at all. Simply ask your Hoi An hotel concierge for help determining where the best places are to celebrate and then enjoy your experience as you absorb some of this incredible Vietnamese culture.

The name of the Mid Autumn Festival in <a href="http://www.travel2hoian.com"target="_top"rel="external"title="hoi an" >Hoi An is a little misleading. Though the name of the festival is “Mid Autumn Festival”, the festival occurs at the beginning of the season of autumn or fall. The Mid Autumn Festival in Hoi An is better known as the ‘children’s festival’ as it is a riotous and frolicking affair filled with fun and games. Though the main participants of the Mid Autumn Festival in Hoi An are children, adults also join in enthusiastically.

Hoi An Mid Autumn Festival

The Mid Autumn Festival in Hoi An is actually a moon festival. It is an annual festival unlike the monthly moon-festival of “Hoi An Full Moon Night” that is held on the 14th day of every month. The Middle Autumn Festival in Hoi An on the other hand is an annual affair falling in the lunar August or the eighth month of the lunar calendar. The festival is celebrated for two days: on the 14th and the 15th of this month.

Dragon Dance at Mid Autumn Festival

The Mid Autumn Festival in Hoi An is a gesture of gratitude to the Moon. The festival is celebrated to thank the moon for its year round services. The occasion is commemorated by baking and exchanging moon-cakes. There is more to the festival than just the prayers and cakes. The Mid Autumn Festival in Hoi An involves a procession of children beating drums and gongs as they parade through the street in the night with lanterns shaped mostly like the moon or stars and sometimes like animals as well. An attractive feature of the Mid Autumn Festival in Hoi An are the ‘Lion Dance’ and the ‘unicorn Dance’ that are preformed by children.

This annual event will feature a series of cultural and sporting exchange activities including a performance of Koto (a Japanese traditional musical instrument); a tea ceremony; calligraphy; Japanese traditional clothing (Kimono and Yukata) and Japanese cooking classes.

The kimono show at the Vietnam-Japan Culture Exchange Days 2009 in Hoi An.

Other unique cultural activities will be organized, such as traditional dance and musical instruments shows, a dragon dance, a floating lantern festival, a street exhibition of photographs about festivals, culinary activities together with many other sports exchange events including cross-river boat race, stick-pushing, etc.

Several famous Japanese art troupes, including Iwami Kagura royal dance troupe, Daisuwa Taiko drum troupe and Sakai City’s lion dance troupe, will join the event.

The first Vietnam – Japan Cultural Exchange Days took place in Hoi An in 2003 and it has become an annual event since then. The event aims to strengthen Vietnam-Japan friendship and cooperation as well as to popularize the charms of Hoi An, a UNESCO world cultural heritage site.

Hoi An was one of the most thriving commercial ports in Southeast Asia from the 17th to 18th centuries. Traders and officials from Portugal, the UK, France and Japan came to Hoi An to do business. Many settled down and some married Vietnamese residents.

A Japanese quarter was established in Hoi An, as exemplified by the Japanese Bridge (Nihonbashi), which is considered the symbol of Hoi An. The bridge is also used as a symbol of the cultural exchange between the two nations.

Since the early 1980s, Japanese organisations, experts and volunteers from the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) have come to Vietnam to research, support and directly supervise the restoration of many monuments in Hoi An.

The UNESCO World Heritage listed town of <a href="http://www.travel2hoian.com"target="_top"rel="external"title="hoi an" >Hoi An is known for its centuries-old streets, lanterns, tailors, Chinese temples, beaches and the Hoai River, which snakes its way through the emerald patchwork of paddy fields before discharging itself into the ocean.

Clams served with crispy rice paper - Hến trộn

But one equally important, but often overlooked cultural foundation is starting to gain traction with those in the know. The food from this central coast tourist centre is winning a reputation as some of the best in the country; and some of the cheapest.

Cam Nam Village, just a stones throw from the heart of Hoi An’s Old Quarter, typifies the sort of gastronomical experience available to people not afraid of straying from the uninspired menus of the lollipop cute cafes dotting the river’s banks.

This tranquil spot, at the lower section of the river, is home to dozens of little restaurants. The one thing they all have in common is that they all serve great local rustic fare.

Three of the most common local dishes served up to punters are: banh dap (smashing rice paper), hen xuc banh trang (clams served with crispy rice paper) and che bap (sweet corn soup).

Banh dap or smashing rice paper derives its name from the action needed to produce the dish. It is made from two pieces of rice paper – the first piece is crispy, the second is wet. To join them together, they must be smashed on to the table.

The two freshly joined pieces are then draped in oil cooked with onions and served with nuoc mam, a pungent fish sauce.

That’s it. A seemingly simple rice paper with contrary tastes: sweet and salty, crispy and soft.

Hen xuc banh trang is a combination of clams and crispy rice paper. The clams are fished up from the Hoai River, which runs through Cam Nam village.

Clams served with crispy rice paper - Hến trộn

The clams are boiled and then fried with dozens of fragrant vegetables and spices, including onion, spring onion, pepper, chilli, ginger, sugar water and peanuts.

When the clams are ready, crispy rice paper is set on the table, which is also used as a spoon for the dish.

Finally the desert: che bap (sweet corn soup). Hoi An’s sweet and sticky corn is perfect for this soup. Locals swear that one bowl is not enough and visitors that return are the first in line, ready for another helping.

Whether this is true or not is a matter of conjecture. What is true, is that no trip to Hoi An is truly complete without sampling the culinary spectacles that small village’s like Cam Nam have to offer.

While trading with Vietnam during the 16th-17th centuries, many merchants from China and Japan contributed to the distinguished culture of Hoi An commercial harbour.

The lantern is the result of exchanges among Vietnamese, Japanese and Chinese cultures famous for their various and specific identities. Originating from a popular appliance from life, the lantern has been lifted to an art of decoration. It now has a firm position in Hoi An inhabitants’ minds and lives. With skillful hands and bountiful imaginations, the lantern is made for different purposes. It is not only for living, but also an artistic work with pictures on silk. Having lost its initial shape, Hoi An lanterns nowadays can be seen in all different shapes and sizes.

Though made of diversified materials, lanterns with bamboo frames and silk covers are the most typical. You can choose lanterns with wooden frames, sometimes made from very precious wood, and on each side of the lantern is a painting depicting a legend. Once lighted, lanterns will illuminate with marvelous, mysterious and ethereal light as if the past of hundreds of years prior has returned to the present day.

Besides ancient houses of over 100 years old, lanterns are the most special things in Hoi An. Lanterns are seen everywhere in the ancient town, not only in lantern shops. At night, when all shops are closed, lanterns are lighted up. Tourists can see Hoi An people making lanterns on the pavement.

For many years, traditional coloured lanterns have enchanted visitors of Hoi An, particularly foreign visitors. Every year, tens of thousands of Hoi An lanterns are exported or bought by foreign visitors as souvenirs and gifts. As a cultural and tourist product, the lanterns have helped raise the incomes of Hoi An’s residents.

Lanterns are not only a special handicraft item of Hoi An but also a unique characteristic of this ancient town, which can’t be found anywhere else in Vietnam.
