The Sa Huynh Culture Museum in <a href="http://www.travel2hoian.com"target="_top"rel="external"title="hoi an" >Hoi An is a bearer of a legacy that is both rich and rare. The Sa Huynh Culture Museum in Hoi An is one of the most important museums located in Hoi An. Located in the Tran Thu Street of the Hoi An heritage center, the museum houses crucial and revealing relics of the Sa Huynh culture. The Sa Huynh culture is a pre historic Bronze Age civilization that occurred in Vietnam, and more particularly in the central region of the country near the coast.

The Sa Huynh Culture Museum

The Sa Huynh culture specialized in metal wares – especially bronze and iron – and ceramics. The majority of the display in the museum comprises of articles like jewelry, weapons like daggers and useful implements like axes. All recovered evidence of these facts are seen preserved and displayed in the Sa Huynh Culture Museum in Hoi An. There is another feature that the Sa Huynh had perfected enough to the level of art; and that is the funerary rituals and rites. Discovery of jar burials of over 200 in number from 50 or more different sites are recorded in the Sa Huynh Culture Museum in Hoi An. Most of the articles on display in the Sa Huynh Culture Museum in Hoi An date back to the 1st Millennium BC which is better known as the Iron Age. There are a total of 216 exhibits in the museum. They were all acquired from the Hau Xa, Thanh Chiem, An Bang and Xuan Lam villages.

The Japanese Covered Bridge in <a href="http://www.travel2hoian.com"target="_top"rel="external"title="hoi an" >Hoi An is one of the famous tourist attractions in Hoi An, Vietnam. The original Vietnamese name of this bridge is “Lai Vien Kieu”. The word can be interpreted as “Pagoda in Japan”. It is considered that the Japanese Covered Bridge, Hoi An is a possession of the Japanese community of Hoi An.

Japanese Covered Bridge - Hội An - Source: Wikipedia Vietnamese

The bridge was built in the early seventeenth century. However, the builder of the bridge is still anonymous to the people of Hoi An. The Japanese Covered Bridge in Hoi An is a beautiful example of Japanese architecture. At one end of the bridge, there is a sculpture of dog and on the other end of the bridge here is a sculpture of monkey. These two animals are symbol of sacredness in Japanese culture. Another reason behind these animal sculptures is that according to the Asian zodiac signs, in the year of monkey and the year of dog many of the Japanese emperors were born. Records also say that the construction of the bridge was initiated in the dog year and was finished in the monkey year.

Inside the Japanese Covered Bridge in Hoi An, there is a temple of the northern god Tran Vo Bac De. This god is considered to be the god of weather. People believe that He controls all kinds of weather changes and natural calamities. So the sailors worship this god and also fear Him.
Triều Châu Assembly Hall
The former harbour town of the Champa people at the estuary of the Thu Bon river was an important Vietnamese trading centre in the 16th and 17th centuries, where Chinese from various provinces as well as Japanese, Dutch and Indians settled down. During this period of the China trade, the town was called Hai Pho (Seaside Town) in Vietnamese. Originally Hai Pho was a divided town, because across the “Japanese Bridge”, it used to be the Japanese settlement (16th-17th century). The bridge (Chùa cầu) is a unique covered structure built by the Japanese, the only known covered bridge with a Buddhist pagoda attached to one side.

The town is known to the French and Spanish as Faifo, and by similar names in Portuguese and Dutch. A number of theories have been put forth as to the origin of this name. Some scholars have suggested that it comes from the word “hải-phố” (海浦) meaning “sea town”, while others have said that it seems more likely to simply be a shortening of Hội An-phố (會安浦), “the town of Hoi An”, to “Hoi-pho” which became “Faifo”. In 1999, the old town was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO as a well-preserved example of a Southeast Asian trading port of the 15th to 19th centuries, whose buildings display a unique blend of local and foreign influences.

Today, Hội An is still a small city, but it attracts a fair number of tourists, also being a well established place on the backpacker trail. Many visit for the numerous art and craft shops and tailors, who produce made-to-measure clothes for a fraction of the western price. Several Internet cafés, bars and restaurants have opened along the riverfront. Hoi An is famed for its centuries old Cao lầu noodle, which can only be uniquely served here.

Geography
Before planning a trip to a desired destination of your choice one should get to know about the region’s geographical aspects. So incase you are touring to Hoi An get hold of comprehensive information about the Geography of Hoi An that would surely make you aware about the areas topography.

Hoi An is popularly identified as a small town nestled along the coast of the South China Sea within the region of central Vietnam. It lies in the vicinity of Qu?ng Nam province with about 80,000 residents settled along the region. Hoi An was primitively acknowledged as a harbour town of the Champa community along the Thu Bon river that was soon considered as an important trading zone in the 16th and 17th centuries.

As far as the Geography of Hoi An is concerned the area is nestled about 30 km towards the southern end of Danang while attaining the position of being the 4th largest city in Vietnam. Thu Bon River, which is popularly known as Kuadai, is settled within the area of Khannam Danang Province that flows into the East China Sea. Hoi An is considerably placed at a distance from the sea bay. Hoi An is acclaimed as the prosperous trading port with an huge amount of water sighted along the Thu Bon River. “Hoi An” is popularly identified as a town comprising of numerous amount of villages. Among these villages the six well appointed villages are Ming Phuong, Hoi An, Kochai, Dong An, Zie Hom, Ho Hua along with the town of Hoi An. The three popular districts of Hoi An are called as phuong. Enjoy a tropical weather condition in Hoi An with relatively wet and dry seasons.

Visit the land of Hoi An right away and discover its landscape along with its associated features.

History
Hoi An was founded as a trading port by the Nguyen Lord Nguyen Hoang sometime around 1595. The Nguyễn Lords were far more interested in commercial activity than the Trịnh Lords who ruled the north. As a result, Hoi An flourished as a trading port and became one of the most important trade ports on the South China Sea. Captain William Adams, the famous English sailor and confidant of Tokugawa Ieyasu, is known to have made at least one trading mission to Hoi An (around 1619).

In the 1700s Hoi An was considered by some Chinese merchants to be the best destination for trading in all of South East Asia. However the importance of Hoi An declined sharply at the end of the 1700s due to the collapse of the Nguyen rule (thanks to the Tay Son Rebellion – which was opposed to foreign trade). Then, with the triumph of Emperor Gia Long, he repaid the French for their aid by giving them exclusive trade rights to the nearby port town of Da Nang. Da Nang became the new center of trade (and later French influence) in central Vietnam while Hoi An was a forgotten backwater. Local historians also say that Hoi An lost its status as a desirable trade port due to silting up of the river mouth.

The result was the Hoi An remained almost untouched by the changes to Vietnam over the next 200 years (somewhat reminiscent to the famous walled city of Carcassonne in southern France).

Hoi An city Map

Hoi An was considered as the budding port town of the Sa Huynh community who thrived in the region of Vietnam. It was during the 2nd to the 15th centuries that Hoi An was governed by the Champa Kingdom. Later on Hoi An turned into a commercial port town, having trade links with Arabia and China. As far as the history of Hoi An claims, the port town of Lam Ap turned into the so called Hoi An of the present day. The region flourished with Tra Kieu and My Son, the capital that had temples and towers belonging to the Champa Kingdom.

As far as the history of Hoi An goes, the settlement of Cham civilization within Hoi An was known for the presence of Cham port that had maritime trade links. Due to the strategic location of Hoi An along the merging point of Quang Nam and due to other positive conditions, the province showed affirmative signs of development during the 16th to the 19th centuries.

As far as the History of Hoi An goes, this small town along with the “Silk road” and “Ceramic road” was involved in trade links with countries like China, Thailand, Japan, India, Portugal, Britain, France, Holland, and others.
With time Hoi An emerged as an international port town for trade links along with being a major economic hub for Nguyen Lords and Kings within of Southern Vietnam. It was during the concluding years of the 19th century, the sailing vessels port town of Hoi An experienced its downfall and lost importance in comparison to the industrial port city of Danang.

The province fought for 117-years especially during the year 1858 – 1975 against overseas invaders and finally several Hoianians sacrificed themselves for the sake of the country’s independence and its unification.

Finally it was in December 4th, 1999 Hoi An was placed within the World Heritage list by UNESCO.
